April 5, Perris Raceway (2 days until Michael's 16th birthday, yahoo!) First, a big THANK YOU to the racers in the infield who helped Michael during warm-ups when his shock bolt came off. Such great people, rush in and help whenever they can, super nice. Heat race Michael came in second and secured the pole for the main event. Finished a disappointing 5th place, driver did great, car was terrible. Nothing coming off corners, gearing wrong, blah, blah, blah. Next race at Barona Speedway April 12, dwarf cars running 5th.
March 29.. Ventura Speedway 54 cars, WOW! Heat race Michael started 6th, finished 1st and started the main event in 4th. Michael was trading spots with Bobby Brown, doing very well and SNAP... he literally snapped is front axle! Uhg... Perris Raceway next weekend....
The 2014 season starter was a disappointment. After doing well in the heat race, Michael started in the 3rd position for the main event. In lap 2, the eventual winner of the race put Michael into the wall, nearly totaling the car and putting several drivers lives at risk in a bold and reckless move. We are forever grateful to God for protecting Michael and the other drivers who were caught up in the wreck. Shockingly the track officials who had a birds-eye view, literally within 30 feet of the accident, didn't see who caused it and therefor didn't put the driver to the rear of the field as is called for in the track rules. Thank you to all Michaels fans who were waving his flag on Saturday night in support. While we greatly appreciate your support and concern, unfortunately we have removed your comments to keep the feedback positive. Michael understands that integrity is key in every sport, from the participants to the officials. He has learned a powerful lesson from Saturday night and looks forward to racing in Ventura in a couple of weeks.
And on a brighter note... Michael was awarded the offensive Most Valuable Player for Christian High School Varsity Soccer and All-League Player on Saturday at an awards banquet. In addition at the end of January, Michael was awarded The JV Most Valuable Player for Christian High School JV Football, Division III. His football team has lost two games in two years and our Varsity team, which he also plays on, took the CIF Championship this year, Div III! Play you game Michael, whatever it is and do it with integrity!
September 14, 2013 A couple of drivers from Northern California showed up to showcase their cars and did a darn good job. Michael started the main event 5th, worked his way up quickly to second and was in position to take first from one of those northerners, that is until one of the regular Barona drivers decided he would take the corner as fast as he could and use other cars to slow him down. The words reckless and pinball-machine come to mind. Unfortunately his lack of ability took Michael out of the race, caused a lot of damage to the car and the Northerner took the checkered flag. That's racin!. The great news is that the car is repaired and ready to go for the September 28th race. Michael is currently 5th in points at Barona.
July 20, 2013 - What a PAIN!!! After waiting two weeks for the races, the main event starts and in less than one full lap, cars start spinning and crashing and unfortunately Michael gets t-boned and taken out of the race. That's racing!!!! Frankly after watching the remainder of the race, that might not have been that bad of a situation to be in. Lots of wrecks, drivers and cars out of control, chaos! Praying that the next race on August 3rd demonstrates the driving ability of the field. See you at the races!
July 6, 2013 Yahoo... finally a win in his new car!! No it wasn't the car set-up, Michael's new hair-do, Uncles & Aunts presence, or the new "Ford" emblem he put on his grill, it was most definitely Gods gift to Michael that got him his first win in his D&R Chassis car. Michael started in fourth in the main event, and battled for second for many laps allowing Ronnie Dunlap who was first, to get a big lead. It took many laps to catch him but Michaels car was set up so perfectly which allowed him to get the lead and take the checkered flag. So fun, what a great battle. His dad, Mike Sr., showed Michael that he still had it in setting up the car perfectly then handing it over to Michael & God to win or lose the race, great team work. Check out the videos by clicking on the "links to youtube races" above. Once again, thank you to our sponsors, Eric Webb Construction, Jeff Hughes Construction, Accurate Underground and Grading & Rosson Racing!
June 22, 2013
First and most importantly we thank God for watching out over David Taft who wrecked in what was one of the worst looking crashes we've seen. David got out of the car and provided relief to all who watched his car run up the wall and flip. Hot laps session nearly ended the night for Michael. As is typical, the hot laps and heat races occur on a dry and slick track this time of year and a spinning car in the hot laps caught Michael, knocking his front end out of alignment. It was not caught prior to the heat race and Michael went from the pole to 5th place. Thankfully the crew at D&R Chassis were there and were able to correct the problem prior to the main event. In the 24 car field Michael started 14, finished 7th in a fantastic race. Congratulations to Angel Figuroa on the win. Check out the GoPro video!
June 8, - Twenty cars started the race, Michael in the 11th spot, finishing 5th. Congratulations to Ronnie Dunlap on the win.
June 1, 2013 Orange Show, San Bernardino, CA. - Wow, HOT HOT Day but so much fun!. Michael raced with the CDCRA group. Congratulations to Bobby Brown Jr and Darren Brent on their 1st and 2nd place wins and Ronnie "Monster" Williams for taking 3rd. Michael had a great day on the track and finished 4th behind who are arguably some of the best racers in dwarf car racing today. During the heat and the main event runs, there was some serious pushing and rubbing but getting through all that provided Michael with great racing experience in which to build upon.
April 27, 2013 - Another great day at the races! Great weather, good card games oh and some decent racing as well. As you know, Michael has a new car and it is screamin fast! In the heat race, Michael over-drove the car and spun it twice earning him a black flag (get the heck off the track dude, until you settle down!). That earned him a spot way back in 15th place for the main event. With a few car adjustments and a much, much better track once the sun went down, Michael raced his way up to 7th place by the time the checker came out. No, it wasn't where he wanted to be but it was a great race, fun and he can't wait for the next race 05.11.2013.
April 13, 2013 - Great day at the races!. Our friends Eric & Michele Webb along with their two sons Tyler and Dylan joined us at the track for a beautiful day and chilly night. In the heat race, Michael found himself spinning between turns 2 & 3 which put him back to the 14th spot out of 20 cars, for the Main Event. Unfortunately he was only able to get up to the 7th spot by the time the checkered flag was waved. Not a great finish but Michael has a lot to be thankful for, including some really great talent on the track which makes for an exciting learning experience. Michael was able to video his race using his GoPro camera, see the link at the bottom of the recent videos page. If you have not yet caught a race at Barona, please see this years schedule under "upcoming events" on the lower right hand side of this page. Hope to see y'all soon jack! Thank you to our newest Sponsor, Eric Webb Construction, INC.
March 30, 2013 Hello again race fans, it's officially racing season. We are really looking forward to this years racing events. Michael has a new car, built by Shane Rosson at D&R Chassis,& Rosson Racing right here in Ramona. The season officially kicked off this past Saturday, with a packed field of 20 cars in the main event. Michael took 6th place but with a new car, new hand shifting mechanism as opposed to foot controls and having missed the final few races last year, while not happy with 6th place Michael is looking forward to building on his experience to improve next for race. Hope to see you at Barona Speedway on April 13, 2013!
Tobiason Racing continues to struggle with mechanical issues on Michael's car. This past Saturday night, it looked to be a much needed break when the field was inverted for the main event and Michael got the pole. But as has been the case the entire season, Michaels car could not get any traction and pushed up to the wall nearly every turn. Originaly built by Mr. Ed Morris of Ramona, the car will return to his shop this week to determine what needs to be done to get back on track! Next race, Perris.
As of June 30, 2012 - Michael has been running with the California Dwarf Car Racing Association this year, and unfortunately has struggled with mechanical failures, just about every race. Today Michael raced at Santa Maria, was 3rd in the heat race and finished the night in 8th place out of 22 cars. Not bad, but not where he wanted to be by the end of the night.
Really looking forward to this Saturday night at Barona, his home track. Michael is going to be running one of Shane Rossons cars, D&R Chassis www.drchassis.net/ completely different set up to what he is used to but excited about the opportunity.
As of May 13, 2012 - Michael raced up in Santa Maria this past weekend at the CDCRA sponsored Nationals. The weekend was full of frustration, ending with getting caught up in a wreck, busting the rear axel and much more. With 26 fast cars on the track at once, drivers had to endure numerous cautions due to multiple wrecks. In the first 20 minutes of the race, only 3 laps had been completed. Best to put last weekend behind and look forward to this weekend in Perris!
As of April 28, 2012 - Michael ran his first race with the CDCRA Pro Division, finishing in 5th place at Bakersfield Speedway. After starting in 10th, Michael worked his way up and was able to overcome a couple of bad re-starts. With a field of 21 cars, Michael did well but is looking to improve on his position next race which will be in Santa Maria, California, where he will compete in the Western States Dwarf Car Nationals event. Go to "Links to youtube races" above to see the the RealTV broadcast of the Bakersfield race. Congratulations to Ronnie "Monster" Williams on the win!
April 16, 2012 - Michael gets the win at the seasons first Nationals Event, Pahrup Nevada, April 13-14, 2012. Thought by some to be the best racing of the weekend, Michael started the main event with the pole, having won his heat race. Before the end of the first lap, two cars passed him and he spent half the race catching and ultimately passing them to win.! Next race, Bakerfield April 28.
March 31, 12 - Michael is off to a great start this season. Saturday afternoon Michael won his heat race however the track officials inverted the lineup for the main event so Michael started in 10th. Bottom line, Michael raced his way up to the second spot with less than a half a lap to go and just couldn't catch the first place car. The video of the race can be seen in "links to youtube races" above.
Oct 29, 2011 - What an unfortunate night!. After winning the heat race, as usual Michael is placed in the back of the pack because he has the highest average points per race... huh?. It's true, although he has missed 3 races (competing in National events) had a DNF, has won 5 races and went into the weekend 6th in points he still holds the highest points per race average so he has to start in the rear, in front of some rookies and in the 10th spot. So the main event starts and prior to 1 lap being completed #11 wrecks. Michael is right on the back bumper of #03 and the #03 has to brake hard to avoid the #11 wrecking and Michael destroys the #03 bumper and damages the front of his own car as well. With approximately 6 laps to go, Michael has now moved into the 3rd spot and hunting down the 2nd place car #92, who comes down on him and checks up prior to reaching a turn. Michael holding his position and speed, hits the #92 car and the driver is unable to hold on to the car (must have braked) and spins out of control. Although a questionable call, the officials send both cars to the back of the race field and with three laps to go Michael passes 5 cars which isn't enough to keep him from having he worst finish of the year. The good news is that the GoPro camera recorded the race and there is much to be learned from it.
Although the year has come to an end for racing, stay tuned as Michael searches for more races to compete in both here and abroad!
Oct 16, 2011 - Michael, Mike and Uncle Jeff went up to Santa Maria this past weekend to compete at the CDCRA Regionals. Michael won all four of his races, ending the weekend with the championship! Michael is too young for membership into the CDCRA however they allowed him to compete at the regional level and we are all very thankful to CDCRA for providing him this opportunity. A very special thaks goes out to Todd & Judy Salazar, owners of Barona Speedway who are the only track owners in California to allow Michael the opportunity to race dwarf cars at his age. Without their support, Michael would still be driving little cars with lawnmower engines.
Michael will compete in the last race of the season at Barona on Oct, 29, 2011. Please come and show your support for Michael and the Barona Speedway!
Oct, 1, 2011
Michael and his Dad went up to Marysville this weekend to race in the nationals. Michael took 2nd in the main event, topping last years 3rd place finish. He is not happy about it however. Having led 12 of the 20 laps, a caution came out and on re-start, he fell back to 4th place. Michael's car is carburated while all the others are fuel injected, and therefor he is slower off the start. It took several laps to come around the 3rd and then 2nd place cars and left only one lap to catch the race leader, who had opened up a significant lead with a clear track. When asked why he would skip the Barona race when he has 5 race wins there and seemingly would be challenging for the championship, the bottom line is that mathmatically Michael who was in 3rd as of last week, can't catch the race leader (although he has 3 more wins) because of the way points are calculated, the fact that he missed a race early in the season to compete in Nationasl (took 3rd), and had two DNFs. Michael loves to run at Barona, but had a great time being challenged by a new group of drivers on a new track.
If you are interested in attenting a race, check out Barona Speedway @ http://www.baronaspeedway.com/ . Judy Salazar and Todd (Judy's son) are the owners and operators of Barona Speedway, the only California track who will allow Michael to run (because of his age). Barona is a great track and always presents challenges for the drivers as the track surface changes from day to night and cold to warm weather conditions. Michael's car is a 34 Ford Sedan powered by a 1200 Blackbird Honda and reaches speeds up to 80 miles per hour.
Typically there are between twelve and eighteen Dwarf Cars competing. Races are every other week (see upcoming events for dates). Michael's first year in Dwarf Car racing was last year 2010 and he came in 3rd overall in points. To date, Michael has the highest race points average overall so regardless of where he places in his heat race, he has to start at or near the back of the pack. That actually is not so bad as it allows him the experience of battling up to the front, which has taught him to be a better driver. Currently Michael is in 4th place overall due to 2 DNFs (did not finish) for mechanical reasons and because he missed a race in order to compete at the Nationals in Pahrump, Nevada where he took third overall. Michael has won 3 of the 10 races he competed in this year has 2 seconds, 2 thirds and a fourth place run.
Michael is working on building his fan base. Every race day, he goes into the stands and hands out black and white checkered flags with his car number on them to all the kids. They love it and when his race begins, it's a kick to see all the flags flying.
Michael has also started his search for some sponsors. We are currently working on a sponsorship opportunities page so check back in soon and look for it. If you or if you know of anyone who might be interested, please have them take a look at tobiasonracing.com. Owning our own business and having worked for a large family owned business, we are very well aware of how important it is to make the most of potential sponsors advertising dollars and will make it well worth their investment. Thank you!
